6. Hogan Stand, Croke Park- All Ireland Hurling Final Day when Cork are playing
It is hard to get tickets for an All Ireland final in hurling or football. Correction impossible Think Superbowl, Olympic 100 meter Final day and you are there. People spend months looking for tickets and when you get one you are one of the elite. Therefore the Hogan Stand is one of my favourite places in the world. No doubt about it. Sitting watching Cork. Unless of course they lose and I then don’t not want to be there any more.
5. Race Finish Line
I enjoy running but I enjoy finishing and stopping even more. One of my favourite places is just after the finish line of a road race. You have run hard and in my case be passed by many people who are fitter than you but then you see the finish line, your pace picks up, you run that little bit faster and you see your time ticking away in the timing clock. Then it is over, the feeling of accomplishment is second to none. The endorphins from accomplishing a race and meeting a goal course through your body and you feel like punching the air and shouting Yes! In fact I often do.
4. Castlegregory Co. Kerry,Ireland Back Beach
I try and spend as much time as possible on this beach. Simply put it is one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Clean sand, great waves and surfers of all types killing the waves even when the weather says no. However it is in winter when the holiday makers are gone and you can walk along it (or run sometimes) that the beach stands out. I have often been the only person on the bech on a December day. Off in the distance looms Mount Brandon and the waves crash noisily onto the sand. Heaven!
3. Mount Manganui, North Island, New Zealand
I spent 4 weeks in New Zealand last year and Mount Manganui is the New Zealand version of Castlegregory except that the weather is far warmer !! Better coffee too.
2. Up the Front!!
When I was in my teens and early twenties I loved a good gig. When I used to go to a gig I loved pushing right up to the front (I mean the very front) and moving in the heaving mass there. This was before the term mosh pit became common slang. Even when there isn’t a pit and the music lends itself to a more sedate crowd I still forsake that last drink before a concert to get in early and be up close and personal to the performer. Recently I went to see Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and did spend a few songs up the front but retired to the sides to recover after a while. The old back cant take it any more but it was fun for the few songs.
