Memories of Cork

I dropped oldest boy off to hoops last night and for a change ran during the hour of his practice session on a new route.  The run took me through the streets of Cork city and along the banks of the River Lee on a couple of occasions (you can’t avoid the river in Cork).  The city was in the lull between the office workers going home and the young people and students of the University city coming out to play on Thursday night.so there were few people on the streets.

I ran past my both of my first primary schools both now closed as inner city family numbers decline.  Past the church where I celebrated my communion and confirmation.  The river was darkening as I ran passed University College Cork where I spent four years trying to comprehend the mystics of computer science.  I ran past the empty space where Sir Henrys rock bar had been and where I had both worked and been in the audience for many of the top bands in the early 90s when it had been a rock venue par excellence  prior to becoming a centre for the dance scene.

Back along the river again towards Douglas and skirting Cork City’s soccer ground.  Every year I try to attend more games this year to roar on the Rebel Army.  Finally stop at basketball hall, drink water and warm down.  Just as I finish warm down oldest bursts out of hall finished his session. He is sweating and I am sweating, young and old finished our exercise session.  We exchange workout reviews in car on the way home.  Roll on June I think.
